Hello & Happy New Year!
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with some information about the next step in the process of your son/daughter’s applying and gaining admission to the institution of choice after graduation from WIC.
Every year following exam results, I meet with each student to discuss their options, review their grades & assist with their applications. This year, the individual meetings will begin on January 30th, 2012 and continue through to February 24th, 2012.
Meetings take place during the school day. Each meeting is 1 period (54 minutes). Students are required to see me over the next week to set up a time. Meetings are compulsory. Should a student not wish to meet & apply on their own, a letter from his/her parents must be provided. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings if their child wishes.
What to bring to the meeting:
- A visa or Mastercard credit card to pay the application fee to each CEGEP ($30-$35).
- If a student is applying to Marianopolis, a photocopy of his/her birth certificate & copies of Ministry marks and Sec. IV & V WIC report cards.
- If a student is applying to Dawson, a photocopy of his/her birth certificate. WIC will send all grades directly to Dawson.
- If a student is applying to John Abbott, there is no need to bring any documents. WIC will send all grades to John Abbott and they have access to each student’s birth certificate.
- An 8 x 10 envelope for each CEGEP that requires documentation.
CEGEP Information Sessions:
CEGEPS will be hosting Information Evenings in February. If students missed the Open Houses in the fall, this is an excellent opportunity for them to get all information they need to make an informed decision about their CEGEP application.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL OPTIONS!!
Students need to stay on track with their studies during the second term. Any offers of admission are conditional, which gives the colleges/schools the option of revoking the offer of admission if students have not maintained (or improved) their academic performance.
Also, universities will require high school transcripts when students are applying. It is in the students’ best interest not to let their academics slide during the last half of the school year and to ensure they have performed to the best of their ability.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind
regards,
Kimberley Wolfe, M. Ed.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELLING OFFICE
The winter season is coming to an end and we are heading into the CEGEP acceptance season. Students are beginning to receive replies from the CEGEPs of their choice. It may take longer for some students to hear from the CEGEPs than others. Please be patient. No reply at the present time means they are still processing the student’s file. Any questions regarding individual status should be directed to the Counselling Office. Please remember that if your child receives a Notice of Refusal from the SRAM system, another application must be done for the second round and possibly the third round. Please direct your child to see Mrs. Wolfe to review the options and re-apply.
Furthermore, it is extremely important to remind your child that any acceptance is CONDITIONAL as written in the information sent by the different CEGEPs. At school, all students are reminded on a regular basis that they need to work consistently and seriously until the very last exam. The admission officers expect the students to maintain or exceed their current overall average. In May, a speaker from the Student Success office at John Abbott will be visiting West Island College. Secondary V students will have the opportunity to learn how to successfully handle the transition from high school to CEGEP.
Several GUEST SPEAKERS will be visiting West Island College over the next few weeks:
- During Brain Awareness Week (March 14th – 20th), Medical students promoting public awareness and an understanding for neuroscience research, the brain and its functions will be speaking to the Secondary V students during their Science Practicum.
- La Maison Jean Lapointe will be conducting a workshop with Secondary V students on Gambling Awareness. These educational workshops deal specifically with games of chance & money and gambling problems among youth. Topics include the “real” chance of winning, how games of chance & money really work, the types of games young people are attracted to and the major risk factors involved.
- The Mental Illness Foundation will be presenting their “Partners for Life” Program to the Secondary III & IV students. This campaign focuses on mental health as opposed to the disease. Its message is designed to encourage youth to act before serious problems arise, to break their solitude by talking about what’s bothering them and to seek help.
- Secondary III students will have the opportunity to learn about healthy nutritional practices and sports nutrition such as myths about protein powders and energy drinks during their upcoming Science classes.
- The Teenage Health Unit from the Herzl Family Practice Centre at the Jewish General Hospital will be speaking to the Secondary II & IV students on a variety of current issues in adolescent health. Students will be given the opportunity to anonymously submit written questions related to their health concerns.
